China is now home to top-tier universities, affordable tuition, and an unmatched scholarship ecosystem. It also hosts one of the largest international student populations in the world. For students from Pakistan, South Asia, Africa and Central Asia it offers degrees from well-equipped universities at a fraction of Western prices, with generous scholarships on top.
Here are the seven reasons we hear most often from the students we counsel, backed by the programmes in our current list.
1. Tuition you can actually afford
Across the Bachelor programmes in our list, standard tuition ranges from 2,000 to 39,900 RMB a year, with a median of about 14,000 RMB. That is before any scholarship. Use the cost calculator to estimate the full cost for your city and scholarship.
2. Scholarships that cover tuition, housing and a stipend
51 of our 72 programmes have a scholarship option that makes tuition free, and 23 Master and PhD offers are fully funded: free tuition, a free dorm room and a monthly stipend of up to 3,500 RMB. Read our guide to scholarships in China for the details.
3. You can study in English
60 of the 72 programmes in our list are taught in English, including all six MBBS programmes. You do not need to speak Chinese to start, although learning some Mandarin makes daily life much easier.
4. Many routes without IELTS
7 programmes state clearly that no IELTS or Duolingo score is needed, and another 30 brochures do not mention a language test at all. Some universities run their own short online English test instead. Our eligibility checker shows which programmes fit your English level.
5. Modern campuses and strong science and engineering
Chinese universities have invested heavily in laboratories, libraries and housing. Engineering and computing are particularly strong: 43 programmes in our list offer engineering majors and 42 offer computer science or AI.
6. Safe cities with large student communities
Students consistently describe Chinese cities as safe, with reliable public transport and welcoming international student offices. Most of our programmes are in affordable tier-2 cities in eastern China, such as Nanjing, Hangzhou and Wuhan, rather than the most expensive metropolises.
7. A degree that opens doors at home
Trade and investment between China and countries such as Pakistan keep growing. Graduates who understand Chinese business culture and speak some Mandarin have an edge with companies working on joint projects, including CPEC.
